It looks like someone will have to bring the banner heralding North Central’s girls’ volleyball region championships, down from the rafters again, to add "2011" to the program’s ever-growing list.

On Thursday, Andy Johnson’s charges took down Chesterfield in four games --- in a one-match playoff at Buford High School --- to capture the Region 3-A championship. It was the fifth conference crown in as many years for the Lady Knights, which improved to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in Region 3-A.

NC, the second-ranked class A team in the latest state volleyball coaches’ association poll, will open post-season play tonight when it hosts North, the Region 4 fourth-place finisher, in a 6 p.m. best-of-five match at The Castle in Boonetown. With a win tonight, the Lady Knights will host Wednesday’s second round match and the winner of the Brashier Middle College at Christ Church contest.

As for Thursday’s tie-breaker, Johnson and company took games one and two by the respective scores of 25-22 and 26-24. Chesterfield, which split the regular season series with north Central, won game three, 25-15, before wrapping the title up with a 25-21 win in game four.

Senior hitter Elexis Ross had a double-double for the winners with 17 kills to go along with 13 digs while adding an ace. Tiffany Rogers got the Lady Knights’ offensive attack going as she recorded 43 assists on the night with three digs and an ace.

Madeline Pate also had a double-double with 14 digs to go along with 10 kills and a block and an ace. Samantha Snipes was a force along the net with nine kills while Cassady Robinson had seven kills and a pair of digs. Ashley Rogers came up with 19 digs and an ace for the winners.

Johnson said he could not have been more pleased with the way his team battled back and took control of things following an uneven start.

"I was extremely excited for our young ladies as they won the region championship," he said. "It was a night that we had lots of ups and downs with our performance. But in the end, we made the plays at the end of the sets.

"We would like to thank our fans for all their support and we hope that they continue to support us as we enter the state playoffs."

Camden, L-E host Tuesday playoffs matches:

Camden will take on rival Brookland-Cayce, the fourth-place finisher from Region 5 in a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday.

Should Paige Wilson’s Lady Bulldogs come away with the win, they will stay home and host the victor between Hilton Head and St. James in Thursday’s 6 p.m. second round match inside the Dog Pound.

L-E, which was supposedly in a rebuilding phase under first-year head coach Jessica Mullins, finished second in rugged Region 4-4A. For doing that, the Lady Demons will host Tuesday’s 6 p.m. state playoff opener against Gaffney, the third-place finisher from Region 3.

Should L-E win that match, it will be at home on Thursday should the fourth-place finisher from Region 1 pull off a huge upset and defeat top-seeded Hillcrest. Should both L-E and Hillcrest come away with opening round victories, Thursday’s 6 p.m. match will be played on Hillcrest’s home court in Simpsonville.

Camden, which cruised to another Region 6-AAA title, and Lugoff-Elgin, the runner-up in Region 4-4A, will kick off post-season action with Tuesday home matches.
