It’s almost time for the 2011 Kershaw County Christmas Parade.

Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Liz Horton told chamber board members during their most recent meeting the parade is scheduled for Dec. 10. The theme, she said, will be “Saddle Up for the Christmas Season.”

“We let the elementary schools in the school district submit themes to us, and the winning class will actually get to ride on the parade float. The winning entry was submitted by Libby Davis’ fourth grade class at Wateree Elementary School,” Horton said at Thursday’s meeting. “They said they wanted the theme to be centered on horses because Kershaw County is so equine-centric. The ideas that they put in there were things like ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Trees’ with rocking horses or children on stick ponies -- people can just do whatever they can come up with to incorporate the horse theme in the Christmas parade.”

The entry deadline for this year’s parade is Nov. 18.

Also during the meeting, Second Vice President John Thomas unveiled the chamber’s new Customer Call Program. Under the new initiative, each board member will now be responsible for visiting chamber members throughout the year to thank them for their membership.

“We want to go out and see our present members and new members, and say thank you for joining the chamber. We can just reach out to them, ask them if there’s any questions that they may have, or ask them what the chamber can do for them,” Thomas said. “If it’s feasible, try to go by and see one business a week and thank them. And sometimes someone will go, ‘Well what can the chamber do for me,’ so we’ll have some reminders. If you do three a month, we can cover about all of our members through this fiscal year.”

Horton also held a membership portal training session during the meeting.

Among the new features available to chamber members are options to add a Facebook page, business description, business website and directions to the member’s business.

“It’s a very powerful retention tool that people will take advantage of,” Thomas predicted.
