An Elgin man was in a Columbia hospital Friday being treated for a gunshot wound he suffered from an accidental shooting Thursday afternoon in Lugoff.

Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said the 23-year-old victim was at a Yukon Court, Lugoff, home when the shooting took place. Another man living there began driving the victim to KershawHealth when they spotted a deputy around 2 p.m.

According to a Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) report, Deputy Ross McCaskill was traveling on Wildwood Lane and as he approached Richardson Boulevard saw a black Chevy Tahoe stopped at the intersection. McCaskill reported seeing the 21-year-old driver hanging out the vehicle, yelling for help. McCaskill stopped to see what was wrong when the victim stepped out from behind the Tahoe, holding his stomach and screaming for help.

Deputy McCaskill reported he had the victim lay on the side of the road and tried to help him relax while waiting on EMS to arrive. He said the driver told him he was putting his gun into a bag in his garage when it discharged, hitting the victim.

EMS arrived and stabilized the victim who was then airlifted to a Columbia hospital. McCaskill took the driver to KCSO headquarters where he was questioned.

Matthews said he did not know the victim’s condition as of Friday morning; no charges have been filed.
