Rec alternatives accomplish same goal

For several months I have followed the debate about a new YMCA in Camden. To date, however, only City Council and the director of the YMCA in Columbia have formulated a plan to build and operate a new facility here. There are possible alternatives. Therefore, I am proposing the following as a means to accomplish the same objective:

• Build a new facility at the current pool complex on Battleship Road (including a gym and modern offices for our Recreation Department).

• Let the Recreation Department operate the facility and solicit memberships.

• Demolish the current Rec Department offices and build a community center with meeting rooms, banquet facilities, and a complete kitchen.

• Partner with Kershaw County schools to start a high school swim team.

I believe this is a common sense approach that will achieve the objective and save the taxpayers of Kershaw County money now and in the future.
