Musings on a fall day

Random thoughts on a brilliant fall afternoon:

• Speaking of brilliant fall afternoons, is there anything better than this time of year, when you have to pull the covers up around your neck at night and then don a jacket before going out in the morning?

Spring might be a close second, but for many people, autumn wins the blue ribbon. Leaves are changing, smoke is rising wispily from neighborhood chimneys, afternoons are still pleasantly warm, and even with winter approaching, we know that here in Kershaw County, it won’t last that long.

• When Hollywood directors cast actors to play Southern roles, you can pretty much bet the accents are going to be horrid -- thicker than syrup, exaggerated, cornpone.

But the folks who made “The Help” got it right. I’m not really sure whether they put real-life Southerners in those roles, but if not, they had the best speech coach in the world.

Doesn’t happen often.

• If you want proof that we imitate those we see who do things more skillfully than we do, go no further than the recent custom of golfers taking their hats off to shake hands on the 18th green at the conclusion of a round.

Most guys who play golf wear hats. Until a couple years ago, nobody ever doffed those chapeaus at the end of a round. But a couple of years ago, golfers on the PGA Tour -- those are the best players in the world, of course -- starting taking their hats off before shaking hands.

Now you see it everywhere.

I just hope we don’t take it too far and all try to “Be Like Tiger.”

• The pro basketball season is on hold while players and owners squabble over money. The average owner is an egocentric gazillionaire. The average salary for a player in the league is $5 million.

Are you feeling sorry for either side?

• A company that sells a certain brand of footwear here in the U.S. claims you can lose weight just by walking around in its shoes.

The United States has one of the highest obesity rates in the world.

Think there could be any connection?

• Kim Kardashian just split from her husband of 72 days. Her mother says she is shocked and saddened by the fact that some people believe her daughter married for anything other than love.

Shocked and saddened. Can you imagine?

• Thanksgiving is approaching, and many people here in Kershaw County will no doubt be deep-frying turkeys.

Nutritionists undoubtedly don’t recommend frying as the ideal way to cook holiday birds, but doggone if it doesn’t make them tender and juicy.

I’ve never fried a turkey, but I’ve watched lots of my friends do it, and it appears to me there is a direct relationship between doing the frying and consuming large quantities of beer.

Maybe that’s why they taste so good.

• Think you could find anyone in Camden who is neutral on the YMCA issue?

• The South Carolina-Clemson football game is always fun, even in seasons when the teams aren’t doing that well. This year, with both of them sporting spiffy records, should be especially exciting.

Watch for lots of orange and garnet flags flying from cars a couple weeks from now.

• I wonder if Amanda Knox -- “Foxxy Noxxy,” as the media dubbed her -- really is innocent of that murder in Italy.

• A new poll indicates that only 6 percent of Americans believe those serving in Congress deserve to be re-elected.

Where the heck did they find that 6 percent?
