Looking for 'good junk'

Cassandra Mickle (center), an art teacher at Stover Middle School, has been collecting “good junk” for years. The “good junk” includes Styrofoam meat trays, egg cartons, old magazines, containers with lids, toilet and paper towel tubes and other items. During the past few years, students have used “good junk” items to make creative pieces of art. Due to recent budget cuts, Mickle said she has relied more and more on these items – much of which is donated by the community -- for her art classes. Most recently, a large donation of art sketch pads was given by Dan and Lisa McDonald. This donation allowed Mickle’s students to create art without worrying about a shortage of paper. It will also provide for future classes. Mickle said the students really enjoy their own personal sketch pads and are very appreciative of the McDonalds. For more information on “good junk” items that can be donated, call Mickle’s art room at 438-7414, Ext. 2836 or visit her website at
