For Savannah (left) and Sonya Cary, community service comes as second nature. The girls, both Stover Middle School students, recently organized a “pack-a-pick-up” to benefit local animal shelters, including the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter. Other shelters benefiting were SQ Resque and Pets Inc.

“We heard on the news that these shelters needed food, and with winter coming, they will also needed blankets and other supplies,” Savannah, an eighth grader, said.

The girls held a drop-off outside of Pet Smart to collect donations as well as got classmates from Stover and neighboring Blaney Elementary School involved.

“We’ve always tried to help animals,” Sonya, a seventh grader, said. “We don’t like to see them suffer.”

The girls collected pet food, treats, blankets as well as cash donations, which was used to buy more supplies for donation.
