State Tree Service, the contractor selected by the city of Camden to remove hazardous trees under a tree mitigation grant, began work Thursday along Lyttleton Street.

Camden Urban Forester Liz Gilland said the Dalzell-based company will remove 35 trees tagged as either dead or dying or that also posed a safety hazard to citizens. Gilland has said those who live near the removed trees can apply to receive free firewood from the cuttings.

The project is expected to take several weeks. The tree mitigation grant was funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
