I am certain that many people in the city of Camden and in Kershaw County are saddened to learn that Dr. Tommy Joseph is retiring. He has practiced pediatrics in Camden for over 35 years. I have had the privilege of knowing Tommy my entire life; he is my brother.

Throughout his life, Tommy has been successful and accomplished. He was extremely popular, a remarkable student and an outstanding student leader. He earned and served as an officer in numerous organizations all through his academic career. After serving his peers at Winyah High School, he was an honor graduate of Georgetown University and Medical University of South Carolina.

As important as his academic accomplishments is his commitment to serving others. Tommy entered medicine because of his desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. His dedication to and care for his patients and their families have always been exemplary. His wisdom and selflessness have touched countless lives.

In the movie “Saving Private Ryan” an elderly Ryan stands at the graveside of fellow soldiers and tearfully asks his wife if he has been a good man who has lived an honorable life. I can tell you that Tommy has.

Tommy has been a loving husband, father, son and brother. Surely, his future is a bright and promising one. I know that many in Camden will miss him in his professional capacity. Yet, I know he will continue to keep and serve others and that he has a fulfilling retirement ahead for himself, his family and his community.
