Some of the faces may have changed, but the results remain the same for the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team which kicked off its season with a sweep of York and host Rock Hill on Wednesday night.

The Demons, the third-ranked team in 4A in the scmat.com pre-season poll, dismantled York, 66-6 in the opener. L-E closed the evening by upending fourth-ranked Rock Hill, 37-21, in a rematch of last year’s 4A third round state playoff contest, which was also won by the Demons.

Third-year L-E head coach Evan Moxie, whose team was still minus a starter or two, said he was pleased to open the season with a pair of wins, especially on the road.

"With it being our first matches of the year I was happy with the way that our underclassmen performed," Moxie said. "The older guys on the team did what they needed to do and we were able to get the wins."

In the evening’s feature match, senior heavyweight Joey Counts got L-E out to a quick 3-0 lead when he won via decision over the Bearcats’ Travis Ray. The hosts won by pin at 106 pounds before L-E’s Brandon Noel won his 113-pound contest by injury default. Chris Jackson made it two in a row for the guests, winning by decision at 120 before Andrew Mills gave the Demons a 15-6 lead with a decision win at 126 pounds.

The two sides then traded pins with the Demons’ Johnny Murphy answering a Bearcat fall by putting his opponent on his back at 138 pounds. After Rock Hill won by decision at 145, L-E responded with back-to-back pins from Harrison Kruger and Corey Edenfield at 152 and 160 pounds, respectively. Rock Hill closed the gap to 33-21 with wins by decision at 171, 182 and 195 only to see L-E’s Allen Jennerette score a major decision victory at 220 pounds to close things.

In the York match, L-E received pins from Larry Roby (106 pounds), Noel (113), Jackson (120), Mills (126), Murphy (138), David Osteen (145), Edenfield (160), Jennerette (220) and Counts at heavyweight.

Winning by decision for the Demons were Justin Brown (132), Kruger (152), Derrick Miller (171) and Wade Branham at 182 pounds.

The Demons will head to Eastside tonight to spend the weekend there as the Demons take part in the ultra-competitive two-day Southern Slam, hosted by Eastside High School. Moxie said this will be another step in the learning process for his young squad.

"We are, by no means, close to where we want to be, but you never are at the beginning of a season," he said. "I have a great group of kids that really have come together as a team over the last couple of weeks. If we continue to work the way that we have been there is no reason why this team won’t be in the thick of things when it comes to state finals time."
