The 82 children of the Montessori School of Camden anxiously awaited the arrival of their grandparents and extended families for the annual celebration of Grandparents’ Day.

Each class had prepared for the visit in a different way. The Infant (6 weeks to 18 months) and Toddler (18 months to 3 years) classes -- with a little help -- made water color greeting cards with the inscription “If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden.” The Primary children (ages 3-6) made notes so they could play “Montessori I Spy.” The Lower Elementary students (ages 6-9) made Rice Krispie treats. The Upper Elementary students (ages 9-12) prepared a welcome song in Spanish.

About 75 family members arrived at 9:30 a.m. and were greeted by the headmaster, Dr. John Moncure, who welcomed them and shared some insights into the Montessori Method of education while the children made final preparations for their arrival in the classrooms.

The students greeted their families and showed them lessons they were mastering, and explained how to perform the tasks with a great pride of accomplishment. By 11 a.m., the event concluded. The families left the school and the day settled back into its routine, with the children a little bit happier that they had been able to share their world with the loved ones who were mostly unable to see them every day, and the family members with a richer understanding of the children’s Montessori experience.
