Lugoff-Elgin junior Allen Jenerette won the 220-pound division in last weekend’s Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Southern Slam Invitational held at Eastside High School in Taylors.

Jenerette capped a 4-0 weekend by downing Michael Vickers of Woodward Academy in Georgia in the finals, 8-4.

As a team, the Demons finished in 15th place in the two-day, 35-team event with 95 points. Archer (Ga.) High School won the prestigious event with 195.5 points.

L-E is still minus several starters including 195-pound senior Zach Connell, who is nursing a hand injury sustained in the final football game of the season with Sumter last month.

On his way to the 220-pound championship, Jenerette defeated wrestlers from Kell (Ga.), Dorman and Archer high schools to earn a berth in the finals.

The Demons’ next best finish were a pair of sixths from sophomore 120-pounder Chris Jackson and another sixth from senior Derrick Miller at 170 pounds. L-E freshman Harrison Kruger was eighth in the 152 pound division.

Following the event, Demons’ head coach Evan Moxie said his team needed to get back into the wrestling room and continue to work hard to improve on their early season perfiormances.

"There’s not much to say," he said of the weekend in the Upstate. "We’re just not where we need to be."

The Demons (2-0) return to the mat tonight when they host Chester, which was seventh in the Southern Slam, and state class A power Chesterfield in a 5 p.m. start inside the Demons Den.

L-E will head to Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School on Saturday morning for an individual tournament.
