CHRIS JACKON HELPED L-E to the championship in Saturday’s Red Raider Invitational by winning the 120-pound title. The sophomore and his Demon teammates will host Saturday’s 20th annual MPCU Demon Holiday Classic.

Suddenly, the previous weekend’s 15th place showing by the Lugoff-Elgin wrestling team in the Southern Slam at Eastside seems like a faded memory.

This past Saturday, Even Moxie’s charges headed to Bamberg-Ehrhardt for the one-day Red Raider Invitational. The Demons returned from the individual tournament with the event with the team trophy and four champions.

L-E scored a whopping 235.5 points to easily outdistance its closest pursuer, Edisto, which finished with 142 points. Cane Bay (139), Bamberg-Ehrhardt (131) and Battery Creek (123) rounded out the top five finishers in the 15-team field.

Brandon Noel gave L-E its first champion as he won the 113-pound division. Teammate Chris Jackson then took the 120-pound crown. Zach Connell and Allen Jenerrette won the 195- and 220-pound classes, respectively, as all four wrestlers went 3-0 for the day.

The Demons received second-place finishes from Kahlil Cooke (138) and Corey Edenfield (160) while Larry Robey (106), Trey Marrow (145) and Derrick Miller (171) each came in third place.

Moxie, whose team came into the event after defeating Chester and Chesterfield in a tri-match on Wednesday, said he likes the way his wrestlers have answered the call following a rough two days at the Southern Slam.

"We got better as a team this weekend," he said. "I am very pleased with the direction that we are heading.

"When we get everyone where they need to be in the lineup, we have the potential to be very tough."

L-E will travel to Chapin tonight for a tri-match which includes Newberry. The event is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
