The spirit of Christmas

Surrounded by the marvels of all the electronic capabilities among us today, I have put pen to paper to wish you a joyous holiday season. In the lifetime of our son, Edwards, we may see pen and paper become historic tools.  So, while I can, I want to share a holiday message with each of you.

To those who are serving our great nation in the sand and in the snow far from home, to others who stand as quiet sentinels for our safety, and to those who are preparing to celebrate this beautiful season with family, with children and grand children, allow yourself to receive the spirit of Christmas. The true spirit of Christmas is not marked by a certain place or a certain time of year, it is marked by what is in our hearts every day of every year. The values that we share far outweigh any differences we may have with one another. Look into the faces of wondrous children or into the hopeful eyes of those with more age; celebrate with the brilliant colors and joyful sounds around you -- allow the true spirit of Christmas to mark your heart today and every day of every coming year.

It is truly a special time of year, a time of renewal. It is also a time to be thankful. A time when you can be thankful for liberty, a time to be thankful for the freedom to worship as you please, and a time to share the gift of love and peace, joy and hope. As we gather around our trees or greet friends at holiday socials, let us also give thanks for all the good and joy that we of Camden have today and will have tomorrow. Let us renew ourselves and let us enjoy a great town in which to live, to work and to play.

As I place this pen aside this evening, Sara joins me in wishing you a blessed season.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, from our home to yours.
