Lugoff-Elgin opened play in Region 4-4A basketball by splitting a Tuesday night road doubleheader at Richland Northeast High school.

The Lady Demons snapped a two-game skid with a 51-39 victory over the Lady Cavaliers.

It was a much different story in the boys’ game as the hosts upended the Demons, 72-34.

In the girls’ game, Von Duncan’s Lady Demons (2-3) used a 24-point second quarter to take a commanding 32-12 lead into the locker room at halftime. The two sides were knotted at 8-8 after one quarter of play.

L-E led, 39-27, after three stanzas and would not be threatened in the fourth quarter.

In the nightcap, Derek Belton’s troops fell to 0-5 with the defeat at the hands of the Cavaliers.

Bobby Gary led the Demons with 10 points while Michael Sumpter was next with eight.

RNE all-state candidate Travis Hammonds led all scorers with a game-best 30 points.

Tonight’s games:

After having had Tuesday night off, North Central returns to the court when the Knights and Lady Knights play host to rival Andrew Jackson. The girls’ game tips things off at 6 p.m.

Camden hits the road to meet McBee in a 6 p.m. non-conference doubleheader while Lugoff-Elgin visits Spring Valley, also in a 6 p.m. start.
