The Bethune Lions Club and the Bethune Woman’s Club have similar objectives -- to work toward the betterment of their community by promoting its civic, cultural, educational, and social welfare.  To this end, these two clubs work closely together.  The clubs are voluntary service organizations committed to undertaking humanitarian projects within their community.

The Bethune Lions Club was organized Oct. 6, 1952, and chartered on Oct. 30, 1952, with 34 charter members.
Their motto is “We Serve” and are dedicated to sight and hearing conservation work, diabetes detection and research, youth programs, and international cooperation and understanding.

In 1970, the club began meeting at the old Grammar School, now the Bethune Woman’s Club, where the meals have been prepared and served by members of the Woman’s Club.

Their major fundraising efforts are:  broom sale, candy day sales, community calendar, and Vidalia onion sales.
The Bethune Woman’s Club was organized in 1951.  It  is a nonsectarian, non-profit organization with a membership of 27 ladies.  The prime purpose of the club is to provide community service, promote fellowship and maintenance of the building, which is available for rent to the community.

They acquired the Woman’s Club building in 1966 (an old grammar school lunchroom, including the front lot, the building and 100 feet behind the building), and the club’s dream of owning their own building became a reality. They now have a very modern building with all the conveniences and through the work, dedication and loyalty of members through the years have maintained and improved it for the use of the community. Weddings, receptions, family reunions, voting, public speakers -- all have used the building.

In additional to rental fees, a major source of income for the Bethune Woman’s Club comes from the meals it caters for the local Lions Club.
