The Kershaw County School District is featured in the winter 2012 edition of Education Executive for providing a high return on investments in students. The article, “A Can-Do Attitude,” chronicles the district’s continued academic success in the midst of reduced local and state revenue.

The school district was the only system in the Midlands and one of only 12 in the state to be rated as providing a “high return on its investment” in a 2011 Center for American Progress productivity study. The district’s $6,885-per-pupil spending rate is among the lower third in the state.

“We are outperforming our resources,” said Kershaw County School District Superintendent Frank Morgan.  “The taxpayer here is getting a tremendous value for each dollar spent.”

Morgan said the magazine article is an opportunity to showcase the school district and the positive results achieved through the combined efforts of the school board, employees, students, families and the community.  The article features details about the district’s technology program, volunteers, community partnerships, communication efforts and $5.7 million federal Safe Schools Healthy Students grant. It also highlights the fact that Jackson School was the first LEED Gold K-12 certified school in the state.

“The magazine mentions the school district’s ‘can-do spirit’ in the midst of challenging financial times,” said Morgan. “I am extremely proud of this prevailing positive attitude that I see in all our schools. Having this national spotlight on our schools is a great way to start 2012.”
