The Electa Chapter #8 of the Order of the Eastern Star will host a one-day youth basketball tournament on Saturday, Jan. 14 at E. Clarkson Rhame City Arena in Camden.
All proceeds from the event will go toward the organization’s scholarship fund.
The tournament is open to teams with players between the ages of 12 and 19. The entry fee is $50 per team. The entry deadline is Friday, Jan. 13.
To enter a team or to receive more information on the tournament, please call Hampton Wright at 427-4076 or 432-0438.
AAU tryouts on tap: Tryouts for the T-Ballers (15-16- year-olds), the S.C. Ballers (11-12-year-olds) and a yet-to-be named 13-14-year-old boys’ AAU traveling basketball teams will be held at the Olde Armory on Highway 1 in Camden on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 14 and 15.
Tryouts for all three teams begin at 2:30 p.m. and will end at 6 p.m. All prospective players are asked to arrive on time and be ready to hit the court for tryouts.
The teams are open to players from all Kershaw County schools as well as Lee County. Those players who are currently playing for their high school or middle school squads are invited to try out for either of the teams. The teams will not begin play until the high school seasons have concluded.
There is a need for qualified volunteer coaches for the 13-14-year-old team along with a need for churches and/organizations which can donate gym time for practice.
In addition to playing in sanctioned tournaments and  and around the region, team members will also be involved in a variety of community service projects.
For further information on the program, please call Willie Dubose at 424-9834.
