YMCA important step for city

Our children began swimming competitively at a young age. We lived in Columbia at the time and were members of a community swim club in our subdivision. When we moved to Camden in 1979, the YMCA pool provided them with the opportunity to continue this important social and physical activity. Our son and his wife live in Greenville and utilize their "Y" for work-outs several times a week. He is still a swimmer. Our daughter's family participates in the "Y" in Sumter; both grandchildren play basketball there. Our grand-daughter's school holds their swim team practices and meets at the "Y" pool.

Of course, we go to Sumter for swim meets and basketball games, and spend "tourist" dollars because we usually eat at least one meal while there (and sometimes purchase gas, or do other shopping).

We are in many ways a "Y" family. Initially we were inclined to support the referendum effort, but as we learned more about the facts and considered all of the implications, we have changed our stance. We support not only the concept of a "Y" here in Camden, but also the process as outlined and as it is being currently pursued by City Council. We believe that this is important for our community and we expect that the end results will be beneficial for years to come.
