Byron Farnum, a Ph.D. candidate at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., has been awarded the 2011 Perkin Scholarship.

The annual Perkin Scholarship award comprises a $5,000 scholarship to a student from a university selected by the Perkin Award winner of that year. The Perkin Medal Scholarship program has been established to recognize and reward outstanding performance and potential in the advanced study of applied chemistry or related sciences, and to broaden awareness of the Perkin Medal and contributions to society that this award represents. It is awarded at the prestigious Perkin Medal Dinner, which was held in September in Philadelphia, Pa.

A 2004 graduate of Camden High School, Farnum is a son of Donna Farnum of Camden and Peter Farnum of Elgin. He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry in 2008 from the University of South Carolina.

Under the guidance of Professor Gerald J. Meyer at Johns Hopkins, Farnum’s research is centered on fundamental redox reactions relevant to dye-sensitized solar cells and solar energy conversion. His scientific interests include photochemistry, electrochemistry and catalysis.

Farnum is also the recipient of the Johns Hopkins University Chemistry Alumni Graduate Fellowship.
