Both Lugoff-Elgin and North Central dropped conference doubleheaders in and around the Columbia area Friday night.
Demons come up short in Irmo: Lugoff-Elgin held Clemson-bound guard Jordan Roper to four points, but host Irmo had more than enough firepower to send the visiting Demons to a 72-37 loss in a Friday night boys' game.
The loss dropped Derek Belton's charges to 0-11 in Region 4-4A play. The Yellow Jackets improved to 10-1 in league play. Both teams will close out conference action with Tuesday night contests.
Senior A.J. Timmons led the way for the visitors with nine points. Bobby Gary was next with eight while Michael Sumpter added seven points for L-E.
Irmo upends Lady Demons: Irmo placed three players in double figures in getting past visiting Lugoff-Elgin, 56-34, in a girls' Region 4-4A contest played on Friday night.
The Lady Demons slipped to 2-9 in league play while Irmo kept its post-season hopes alive in improving to 4-7.
Von Duncan's squad received balanced scoring in a losing effort with Diondra McKie leading the way with 11 points. Senior guard Aneka Dixon was next with 10 while Dahiana Rodriguez added nine points toward the cause.
Hornets hold off Knights: North Central's hopes of earning a slot in the state class A playoffs have come down to winning at least one of their final two games and then, crossing your fingers.
The Knights fell to 1-7 in Region 3-A play following Friday night's 52-41 loss to C.A. Johnson in a game played in Columbia.
Chad Dixon's troops have two games left in the regular season starting with a home date with Chesterfield, also 1-7, on Tuesday night. The Knights hit the road on Thursday for the regular season finale against Great Falls, the top-ranked squad in the class A boys' ranks.
Against C.A. Johnson, the Knights could not get enough support for junior forward Jeremy Fowler, who continued his hot stretch of play with a game-best 20 points. After that, NC's scoring did not include another player to break the double-figure mark as Kawan Hough and Gregory Holmes added seven points each.
Lady Knights down, but not out: North Central's girls are still in the mix despite falling to Region 3-A front-runners C.A. Johnson, 40-19, on Friday night.
Mitch Lowder's Lady Knights fell to 2-6 in league play against the 8-0 Lady Hornets. The NC girls are still in the mix for a state playoff berth with winnable games left with Chesterfield and Great Falls to close out the regular season.
Senior Elexis Ross led the way for the visitors with six points while Brianna Brown was next with five points.
