Tyrell Cato

A romantic spirit recently swept through Kershaw County government offices after county employees held a poem-writing contest for Valentine’s Day.

Tyrell Cato, lieutenant of operations at the Kershaw County Detention Center, was the winning poet, penning a poem for his wife of two years, Edericia Josey-Cato.

County Administrator Vic Carpenter said Merri Seigler, clerk to council, came up with the idea for the contest.

“We did something at Halloween and at Christmas, and those activities were well received by the community and the staff, and she didn’t want those to just stop for a year,” Carpenter said. “So she saw that Valentine’s Day was coming up and she said ‘let’s come up with something else that’s fun.’ She was able to solicit some donations from the community to come up with a suitable prize, which was a dinner for two at Sam Kendall’s. We certainly appreciate them participating as well.”

Cato’s winning poem follows:

You are my sun, rising to your light that you reflect on my heart.

Peaking into my soul, you warm my spirit on the most cold days,

Making our love feel even stronger in the most pleasant of ways.

To sum it all up I love you … simply put, simply said.
