Surveillance by the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office narcotics unit for drug and prostitution activity at a Lugoff truck stop Wednesday netted a Dalzell man with an extensive criminal background and his wife.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said narcotics agents observed Louis Charles Jenkins, 36, and Sherrie Jenkins, 39, outside the Pilot truck stop at U.S. 601 and I-20 in Lugoff “hanging out.” While the woman remained on the sidewalk, the man approached various people in the parking lot. He then put items in the truck of a car, and he and the woman got in and drove onto I-20.

Agents initiated a traffic stop near the Richland County line. The man stopped but then pulled off as agents approached the car, Matthews said. Agents pursued the car for approximately 100 yards before the man rolled out of the driver’s side and ran into nearby woods. The car veered off the road and into bushes, where the woman was taken from the passenger side into custody.

A check of the man’s background, Matthews said, revealed he was wanted out of Richland County for parole/probation violations related to murder and robbery.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department officers joined KCSO and its K9 unit in an extended search for the man, who was apprehended behind bushes near Larry Jeffers Road by the sheriff.

Matthews said the man was charged by the KCSO with driving under suspension, failing to stop for blue lights, possession of crack cocaine and possession of counterfeit CDs and DVDs. In addition to Jenkins’ criminal record which includes arrests for strong arm robbery, weapons possession and drug trafficking, Matthews said he was arrested on a murder charge but found not guilty in the mid-1990s.

Sherrie Jenkins was charged with providing false information to law enforcement and possession of crack cocaine.
