How about a tax/fee that benefits everyone?

I would like to thank Mr. Floyd Hinson for his well-written article “Citizens paying for services they don’t receive” published in the Chronicle-Independent Jan. 20. He is “right on” about our sewer tax and other taxes/fees such as the special purpose tax. People need to know just what these taxes/fees or whatever you call them are. For those of us who really do care, we need to attend the county council meetings more often so we can see more of what is going on in our area or district. These things make a difference in how and where you live. Attending these meetings might enable you to understand more, and yes, feel good of your surroundings and decisions made by council. It felt good to read Mr. Floyd’s article.

Is there a tax or a fee that most appreciative taxpayers would not mind paying? That’s right -- does not mind paying! Finding one is very tough but it must be based on a positive stand. Fact is that most people don’t like the word taxes at all and, secondly, most do not like paying them. I don’t know anyone who likes to pay taxes. So, hunting for a tax or fee that one doesn’t mind paying might be a little bit like taking honey from a bee. Sometimes bees make more honey if a little is taken away from them. One has to appreciate his/her surroundings to make a difference.

How about if a small fee/tax was imposed to go directly to our sheriff’s department. Let’s say around the $5 mark. Remember that the current sewer fees per property taxpayer is around this amount, too. I do not believe most folks would mind paying this small fee/tax if they know where it is going. Property taxpayers would appreciate it. It would be a tax/fee based on fact. Number 1, it would go to a real thing and, number 2, it would certainly be a tax/fee that 100 percent of us can use. Sewer fees are not! The average taxpayer feels cheated here. If this sheriff’s department tax/fee were imposed, all property taxpayers will be subject to it (just as the sewer fees are) except here, everyone can make use of it. Our sheriff’s department can make use of this revenue, because, to help us more adequately, they need more supplies, manpower and equipment. Most folks today do have a pretty high regard for our sheriff’s department; therefore, most will not mind a small annual fee/tax that goes to help it. No kidding -- most people will support this. They feel good about it!

To put all this in perspective, would you as a property taxpayer rather pay for a sewer that most of us do not have, or a (I call it) sheriff’s department tax/fee that all of us have access to? So, a high salute to Mr. Hinson for smelling out the “sewer fees.” County council should dispose of these fees and encourage one that most folks won’t mind paying. Again, most property taxpayers don’t mind paying for something they really do get. They support it. Think about it and you may feel good about how and where some of your hard-earned tax money goes. If you need our sheriff’s department, they will respond! They feel happy to serve you!
