The North Central High School Band traveled to James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan Oct. 23 to  participate in the South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA) 1A Upper State Championship. The Marching Knights placed sixth overall securing a position at the SCBDA 1A State Finals which will be held Saturday at Batesburg-Leesville High School. The band will perform at 11:15 a.m. This is the first time in eight years that the Marching Knights have made it into the state finals and the fourth time in school history. It is the only band in Kershaw County to make into the 2010 State Finals, according to school officials. “I have a great group of kids who have gone above and beyond what is normally expected of a marching band,” NCHS Band Director Michael Rooker said. “We are hoping to improve our score this weekend and move up in the rankings but the fact that we are included is a big honor for our community, school, and kids.” Members of the Marching Knights celebrating after the Upper State Championship include (first row, from left) Luke Leigh, Sydney Cauthen, Britany Vincent, Dylan Sims, Katelynn Strauss, Zack Truesdale, (second row) Ally Hildreth, Jordan Henderson, Daishaun Baskins, Kendall Knight, Kayla Knight, Taylor Jernigan, Tiara Atkins, Rebekah Byrd, Matea Alexander, James Catoe and Anna Hatcher. Not pictured are band directors Rooker, Nicole Alkire and Katherine Long.
