There’s a new sheriff’s office in town

Tuesday night I attended the Kershaw County Sheriff Office’s community update in the West Wateree area. I want to echo what one of your readers expressed some time ago. We are indeed blessed to have Sheriff Matthews and his committed deputies protecting us. I have lived in Elgin for 13 years. Several of my neighbors and I have been victims of home invasions or car break-ins. Over the years, I have watched little, peaceful Elgin begin an evolution into the Wild, Wild West, but there is truly a new sheriff in town!

Crime and neighborhood disturbances have visibly diminished in my community thanks to Sheriff Matthews and his dedicated deputies. The dispatcher is always kind, consoling, and empathetic. Once, when I called about a noise disturbance, the dispatcher on duty even called me back to ensure that the noise had stopped after she had dispatched the deputy. This is what I expect from my tax dollars!

Sheriff Matthews and his team shared data Tuesday night proving that with proper training and fiscal management, our sheriff’s office can be efficient yet effective in suppressing crime. I was pleased to see him freely and fully address any concerns presented, including dispelling rumors of racial insensitivity within his department.

I hope that the Kershaw County Council will demonstrate their appreciation for Sheriff Matthews and the outstanding work of his staff by allocating additional dollars where needed to continue improving our sheriff’s office and protecting its citizens. May God bless our sheriff and his deputies!
