The man Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) investigators believe robbed the First Palmetto Savings Bank branch in Lugoff Feb. 22 has been caught in Pennsylvania.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said Pennsylvania State Police arrested Christopher Louin Marsh, 27, of Florence around 4 a.m. Wednesday in Clarion County, Pa., located about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Matthews said Marsh acted alone when he robbed the First Palmetto branch on U.S. 1 in Lugoff. He said Marsh used a handgun and left on foot. KCSO bloodhounds tracked Marsh to a location behind the former Piggly Wiggy store where he is believed to have gotten into a vehicle and fled the area.

The sheriff said KCSO investigators soon developed information that Marsh had travelled to Pennsylvania in order to avoid being arrested. He said bank employees positively identified Marsh as the robber and, based on that information, the KCSO obtained arrest warrants on Marsh for armed robbery and entering a bank with intent to steal.

The KCSO alerted Pennsylvania authorities and submitted Marsh’s information to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). Early Wednesday morning, Matthews said, Pennsylvania State Police arrested Marsh without incident at his father’s Clarion County, Pa., home. He said Marsh subsequently admitted to robbing the Lugoff bank.

Matthews said KCSO investigators will travel to Pennsylvania to pick Marsh up and return him here for prosecution. According to NCIC records, Marsh is also wanted in Darlington County for pointing and presenting a firearm. The sheriff said he has previous arrests for a narcotics violation and DUI.

Matthews credited the quick identification and apprehension of Marsh on the hard work of his investigators and for the excellent cooperation between his office and Pennsylvania authorities.
