The Camden Fire Department (CFD) responded to a fire Wednesday night at a vacant home on Broad Street just down from the Robert Mills Courthouse.

CFD Chief John Bowers said that while a definitive cause is not yet known, firefighters believe it started due to discarded smoking materials on the front porch.

“While it’s vacant, people do frequent the house,” Bowers said. “It was noticed by a passerby and burned through the ceiling of the front porch and got into the other areas of the house that way.”

Bowers said the fire itself was put out fairly quickly but that all four lanes of traffic on Broad Street had to be blocked for a time.

“The house is actually on Broad Street; there’s no better way to access it, and the Camden Police Department (CPD) worked diligently to reroute traffic. The hydrant was (down) at the corner of Bull and Broad streets and we had to cross the road with the 5-inch hose to the house on the opposite side of the street,” he said.

Bowers said as soon as they put out the fire and took up the hose, they had the CPD open one side of the street to get traffic moving again.
