Use voting machines carefully

Rosalind Watson, director of Kershaw County Voter Registration, urges voters to carefully check their selecton of candidates on the electronic voting machines Tuesday.

She also cautions against leaning on the machines, which could accidently activate or change selections on the screen.

Despite severe questioning around the state of the voting machines, Watson said she’s confident they work well and are accurate.

Still, Watson said voters must be sure to carefully select their candidates on the machines.

One Kershaw County voter, Elizabeth Long, said she experienced a machine malfunction while voting absentee last week.

Long said she clearly pressed the screen for one candidate, but the other candidate’s name lit up. While she was able to get the situation rectified, she “felt the need to bring attention” to the issue.

“I really took my time to be sure that my votes registered correctly,” Long said. “I’m just worried other people may be in a rush and not paying as much attention.”

Kershaw County polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
