New Tai Chi session begins Monday

Tai Chi is a physical exercise and martial art that has been practiced in China for thousands of years.

The free-flowing relaxation exercise consists of a special arrangement of movements known as the form. The form is many separate movements strung together to produce one continuous sequence lasting for several minutes. Within the form, there are five fundamental principles -- relaxation, Yin/Yang, turn waist, keep body upright and beautiful lady hands.

Combining the forms and principles of Tai Chi will help create overall good health. The word TAI means “great,” while CHI is translated as “vital energy or powerful life force.”

Relax and enjoy good health with the six-week course at the Rec Department building. Classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays, with the next session starting March 12. The cost is $25 per person. Instructor is Taylor Chestnut.

Get a good workout while learning self defense methods with Tae-Kwon-Do classes.

The classes are held each Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. for ages 5 and older at the old armory upstairs. Children will learn self-confidence and self-discipline and adults will master self-defense while getting the ultimate workout. Leading the class will be an instructor from the West Wateree Tae Kwon Do Center.

The fee per month is $30 a month. The next session will begin March 12. Pre-registration is required; call the Rec Department office for more information.

Easy steps with Shag

Learn South Carolina’s state dance – the shag – and have fun putting these smooth moves together.

Join Patty and Larry Blackmon for their Monday night classes, which will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. for beginners and from 8 to 9 p.m. for intermediates upstairs at the old armory. Pre-registration is required to participate, and the class will be held only when minimum pre-registration is met.

The cost is $40 per person for four classes. The next session – for beginners and intermediates – will be March 5-26. Call the Rec Department to pre-register or for more information.

Ballroom dance

Come join ballroom dancing classes offered by the Kershaw County Recreation Department.

The class, for youth and adults, meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Old Armory on DeKalb Street.

The cost is $10 per person and $15 per couple for the four-week session. Instructors are Al and Kay Roberson. Pre-registration is required; call the Rec Department office for more information.

PAL ball

Get in on the fun with PAL baseball, a non-competitive T-ball league for youth and adults of all ages with disabilities and special needs and children who don’t like the physical competition of other leagues.

Team “pals” will provide assistance to players on the league. Teams are mixed with all ages – from 5 to adult -- and gender.

Registration for PAL baseball will be held through March 9 at the Kershaw County Recreation Department. The registration fee is $32.

The PAL baseball program is sponsored by the Rec Department and the Kershaw County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs.

Square dance lessons

Every Thursday night, the Camden Hi-Steppers Square Dance Club meets at the Woodward Park rec building from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for some high-stepping fun. Walk-ins are welcome to drop by and take advantage of an invitation for a free short lesson.

Square dancing exercises the body and the mind, say instructors Frank and Mary Ann Trapp. There are no age, race or faith limitations. There are a wide variety of people found at the Camden Hi-Steppers’ club dances.

Line dance steps

Line dance is a great stress reducer and emotional release as well as good exercise, providing much the same benefits as low-impact aerobics. Increase energy, improve strength and muscle tone. Age is no factor. And you can build your stamina while having fun. Come with a friend or spouse or come alone; you don’t need a partner for line dance.

Classes for beginners are from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays. Intermediate classes are from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays. The classes are held at the Recreation Department building.

A beginner intermediate class is held at 9:30 a.m. each Monday and Thursday at the Rec Department building.

The cost is $4 per class. Instructor for line dance is Ann Segars, licensed by BMI-ASCAP, National Teachers of Line Dance. Pre-registration is required; call the Rec Department office for more information.


For anyone who hates to exercise, Zumba will feel more like a Salsa party than a workout. Zumba has a fast, energetic workout that is fun and addictive. You get lost in the music and dance and don’t realize you’re getting such a great workout!  This is a great remedy for anyone looking for a fat-burning pick-me-up with a positive energy blast that will leave you feeling happy and energized. 

Zumba is not difficult and anyone can, and should, experience it. It’s a Latin-inspired cardio dance fitness class that incorporates many different dance styles and international music rhythms to provide one amazing high calorie burn workout. No dance skills are required to participate in the class. Our classes are created to apply for all fitness levels, whether you are just starting out in finding a healthier life-style or you are already extremely active.

Zumba targets the glutes, legs, arms and abs, all while burning calories through an interval workout of fast and slow movements.

The class will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Class fees are $5 for one class (walk-in); $20 once a week; and $30 twice a week.

The class is instructed by Jennifer Craft. Pre-registration is required at the Recreation Department office with a minimum of six enrolled in the session. Call for more information.


Want to get in shape without all the running, jumping and bouncing? Try Tonetics -- a deep-muscle exercise class involving walking, stretching, bar usage and more.

The purpose is to tone and lose inches, while working all major muscle groups to achieve an all-over muscle fitness.

The class meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Recreation Department building. The five-week course is offered at a cost of $20.

The instructor is Pam Boheler. Pre-registration is required; call the Rec Department office for more information.

Senior fitness class

A group exercise class for ages 55 and older provides a fun variety of exercises to improve strength, flexibility, posture and balance, using a chair and a floor mat (optional).

All participants must be ambulatory and able to follow verbal cues in order to safely and effectively perform the exercises. Instructor is Melia Campolong.

The class meets from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the Rec Department building.

The cost is $20 per month, and pre-registration is required.


Gymnastics classes are offered by the Kershaw County Recreation Department and Wateree Gymnastics of Camden.

Classes are divided by age and offered each Wednesday. Topics include gym safety, mounts and dismounts, over, under and through, cartwheels, nutrition, strength, balance and coordination and working as a team.

The cost for the classes, held at the Recreation Department building, is $25 per month. Pre-registration is required; call the Rec Department office for more information.

Low-impact aerobics

Low-impact aerobics is a great way to get the benefits of an aerobic workout without the strain and stress associated with other exercises, and classes are offered by the Kershaw County Recreation Department.

Low-impact aerobics involves large, controlled movements and large muscle groups, and always leaves at least one foot on the ground.

The class will be offered at 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at the Recreation Department small room; parking and the entrance is at the rear of the building. The registration fee is $30 per month. The instructor is Gwen Bowers. The class will be offered when minimum registration is met.
