Come out for the ’Cue

The ’Cue, as Charlotte Thompson locals call it, has been an annual community event since 1958.
And as the late Betty Garber wrote in 1985, “There will be a general stampede in the direction of the Charlotte Thompson Community tomorrow.”

The tradition continues Thursday -- tomorrow -- at the Charlotte Thompson Community Center from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Hearty plates are $8 and all proceeds are divided between the upkeep of the community center and the Charlotte Thompson Volunteer Fire Department. The meal is available for eat-in or take-out.

Guests will have the opportunity to feast on pork or chicken, rice, hash, slaw as well as homemade desserts. For more information about the ‘Cue, call Sandy McLeod at 432-2629

With the profits from the barbecue each year, the community has been able to maintain the community center building, the grounds and the barbecue pit.

After the ‘Cue this year, plans have been made to make a few major repairs to the pit, said Sallie Cobb.

She also added that “with profits and donation, we have added a heating and cooling system to the building.”

The building is now available for rent by anyone (not just community members). If anyone is interested, call Bobby Lee at 432-9138.

“Our volunteer firemen are responsible for most of the meat cooking, which is still done on an open pit,” Cobb said. “We also have additional members of the community who cook chickens, hash and sauces. They generally start cooking Tuesday morning to get everything ready.”

Tim Watkins, fireman and chief chef, will oversee the preparation of all the cooking of the pork, chicken, hash and sauces.

Cobb said the barbecue is the only thing the community still does together.

“It always makes for good eating!” Cobb said.
