Exercise does a body good

Hello and Happy Friday! Another month has passed so let me see what I have in store for you this month…

Did you realize that spring arrived on Tuesday at 1:14 a.m.? I bet the copious amount of pollen is a hint. So much for winter, but I have always heard there is usually one more frost before Easter -- but probably not this year as Good Friday is only two weeks away. The “Rite of Spring” in Camden is definitely the Carolina Cup. The trash cans, port-a-johns and tents are in place as the 80th running of this time-honored tradition is next weekend! Once again the Cup falls before Easter and those who believe the folklore that you cannot wear white before Easter know the Cup is an exception to this.  There’s no doubt fashion statements will be made throughout Springdale Racecourse on race day. I just hope the “fashion police” don’t arrest me once my 2012 Cup britches make their debut on March 31!

Now that warm weather is here, this is a good time for me to bring up the “E” word -- Exercise! We all have been cooped up inside during what little cold weather we had and it’s time to venture out and enjoy what Mother Nature is providing us and, at the same time, do our bodies some good. I discovered this one particular video on YouTube that outlines the one thing (a/k/a “silver bullet”) that can reduce the effect that many chronic illnesses have on our bodies.

I have always thought it interesting that folks will drive around the block over and over just to be able to park slap-dab in front of the post office. Why is this? I see it in downtown Camden, and I’m sure this happens all the time at many other locations in Anywhere USA. (Of course, I am not talking about handicapped folks or anyone whose walking is difficult.)   

Why do folks waste time and energy doing this when parking is usually plentiful just a few feet away from all the “good spots”?  I guess it’s just a habit or an internal “contest” that we have to always try to park closest to the door wherever your errands take you. So, the next time you go to the grocery store or the post office, park away from the front door and walk. While not a treadmill or walking track, these junkets do count as exercise!

Let me get back to the video for a moment. One of the narrator’s main points is this: He does not care what you do for 23 ½ hours of your 24-hour day. It’s the remaining 30 minutes he is concerned with.  Through many case studies and statistics, the video shows what you do with that 30 minutes each day can not only save your life, but drastically improve your health like nothing else can. Of course, exercising for that 30 minutes each day is what seems to prevent all ills. The video can be found by searching for “23 and ½ hours.” 

Camden is a very walkable city. I have heard that Camden has a parking issue. Camden does not have a parking issue, it has a walking issue. So, if you are able, the next time you drive somewhere, see if you can take a few extra minutes to walk or ride a bicycle where you are going. You can enjoy the great outdoors and get some valuable exercise!
