A challenging week led to a pair of uneven finishes for the Lugoff Elgin boys’ soccer team.
The Demons could not be blamed if they were experiencing a déjà vu when they traveled to meet Ridge View last Tuesday. A year ago, L-E went into Ridge View Stadium and went into penalty kicks before the match would be decided. It happened again on Tuesday in what ended in a 4-3 Demons’ victory.
L-E came up with the first goal of the night which was scored by junior Deuce Brown, who was back in the lineup after missing three games with an injury. The Blazers answered with a goal and the game went to halftime tied at 1-1.
Ridge View came out after halftime with a strong game plan, coming up with the first goal of the second half, only to see the guests match that goal. The game concluded regulation time in a 3-3 stalemate, bringing another game at Ridge View Stadium into overtime. The overtime came and went without a goal from either team, moving the game into a penalty kick shoot-out. This also came down to the final PK ball, with a missed shot by the Ridge View player which gave L-E a 4-3 Region 4-4A victory, its second in four conference matches.
The evening started with the L-E and RV junior varsity squads putting on a display of technical soccer in which neither side could find the back of the nets in regulation.
The coaches agreed to go to a penalty kick shoot-out to determine the winner, which came down to the last ball with the Blazers scoring on that shot for a 1-0 win.
The second challenge of the week came when Irmo, which is ranked second in the nation in the latest ESPN poll, visited Lugoff-Elgin Stadium.
The weather was mirrored the feeling on the field for the hosts; dark and ominous.
After the hosts fell in the jayvee game by a 4-0 count, the Yellow Jackets showed the Demons what a nationally ranked team looked like.
The hosts looked to be on their toes defensively at first; however, the ball seemed to never leave half field. As the lightning and thunder started to roll, the game was delayed for about 30 minutes after 25 minutes of play, with Irmo clinging to 1-0 lead. But when that rain cleared, Coach Phil Savitz and his Yellow Jackets came out strong, dealing the Demons a 6-0 loss.
Lugoff-Elgin is now 2-3 in region play and hasd another region game on Tuesday at Blythewood.
This Friday night, the Demons will tarevel to meet Richland Northeast. The junior varsity match will kick off the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
