The Clinic Classic Challenge, to be held April 21 at 8:30 a.m. in Camden, is open to all students aged 12 and under. The school with the most participants in the McDonald’s 5K Walk/Run will be awarded $500. This prize, thanks to sponsor McDonald’s, may be used at the discretion of the school’s principal.

Parents, sisters and brothers, teachers, administrators and support staff are invited to join the 5K (3.1 miles) or the 1-mile portion of the event sponsored by Camden Family Care.

Proceeds will benefit the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County. The Challenge will begin and end at the Clinic, located at 11C E. DeKalb St. behind the United Way.

The 2011 winning team from Camden Elementary School of the Creative Arts will be defending its title. Both Ben Battiata and Sam White plan to run with their fathers again this year. Ben has the distinction of finishing first in the Challenge 5K portion. Evan Younghans who competed with a broken foot last year will be back again this year with a broken ankle. His plan is to walk part and to be a passenger in a jog stroller for the rest.

The Camden Elementary coordinator is PE teacher Brittany Knapko. She was extremely proud of the CES family last year. “We were able to use the money we won to buy PE equipment to promote physical activity,” she said. She went on to say, “I am very excited about this year’s event. Go CES!”

She has thrown down the gauntlet to other area schools. Jackson School is taking the Challenge. Applications are displayed on the front door and in the office. Jennifer Bennett, the PE teacher, is the school contact. Matia Goodwin, vice principal at CES last year is now principal at Jackson School. She told her students, “We are not going to let Camden beat us, are we kids?” All of the students pictured responded that they were in to win.

Both Camden Elementary students and Jackson School students plan to participate.
