The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) is the Agency of the Year when it comes to DUI enforcement.

The KCSO received the award in the 50-100 employee category at Tuesday’s seventh annual DUI Enforcement Recognition and 2011 Law Enforcement DUI Challenge banquet in Columbia.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said the event is sponsored by the S.C. Department of Public Safety in conjunction with the S.C. and U.S. offices of highway safety.

“They started talking about our dubious distinction of having been No. 1 in DUI traffic fatalities, and then said we had won the award,” Matthew said during a break in the ceremonies. “They said it was due to the reduction in DUI-related accidents and deaths, the number of DUI arrests we made and our participation in a DUI public service announcement.”

The KCSO participated with a number of other agencies in 2011 in a PSA sponsored by the Kershaw County Community for a Safer Tomorrow (CAST). The CAST spot featured Tonya and Tim Spradley whose 5-year-old son Sullivan was killed by a drunk driver on Father’s Day 2005.

In addition to a plaque, Matthews said the department received a radar unit for a patrol car.

“It has to be used for DUI enforcement.”
