Otho S. Pool, Sr.

The funeral for Mr. Otho Singleton Pool, Sr., 92, of Columbia, was held 11 o’clock, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Smyrna United Methodist Church, 16 Smyrna Road, Elgin, SC, officiated by The Rev. Joanne Lockard-Hawkins. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors. The family received friends Monday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. Memorials may be made to Gideon’s International, Post Office Box 1025, Blythewood, SC 29016 or Smyrna United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 66, Elgin, SC 29045. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mr. Pool died Sunday, October 31, 2010. Born September 22, 1918 in Black Mountain, NC, he was a son of the late O. R. S. Pool and Norma Bernice Jones Pool. Mr. Pool was a Battle of the Bulge veteran, proudly serving in the US Army through WWII, during which he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Association, American Legion Post 6, Disabled American Veterans, Gideon’s International, the Forest Acres and Shandon Masonic Lodge, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. His sense of selfless service led him to a career of 38 years with the Veterans Administration as a procurement officer. Mr. Pool was a charter member of Suber-Marshall Memorial United Methodist Church in Columbia, but after the death of his beloved wife, Ruby in 1996, he returned to the church of his childhood and served as a member-missionary at Smyrna United Methodist Church. He had a wonderful sense of duty and patriotism, but most of all, he had a deep love and devotion to his family and friends.

Mr. Pool is survived by his son, Otho S. (Joanne) Pool, Jr.; daughter, Carolyn P. (Christie) Lomas; grandchildren, Sherry (Sid) Allsbrook, Wanda (Kevin) Lindler; Ricky (Christine) Pool, Rebecca (Jose) Carrion, Jonathan (Ariel) Lomas, and Charlotte Lomas; six great-grandchildren, Angela & Sidney Allsbrook, Brandon & Robbie Lindler, and Grayson & James Pool; a brother, Richard (Carmen) Pool; and sister, Charlotte (Raymond) Jackson. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pool was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Moore Pool; stepmother, Nellie Boykin Pool; brother, Glen Pool; and sister, Helen Bell.
