An embarrassing council member

I am very proud to live and work in Kershaw County. Being part of the business community, my wife and I attend county council meetings from time to time. I feel this to be very important and almost necessary. We benefit by business growth. County council meetings can offer business benefits and we usually come out feeling glad that we attended. These meetings allow us to gain an appreciation of the councilmen and what they do, or may be up against.

If you can, go to these meetings even if it is just one or two times. Take the time to do this. Look around when you are there at just who and what you see. Judges, attorneys, writers, plan presenters, our sheriff, fire personnel, farmers, organizers, TV news reporters, businessmen and worried mothers. All these concerned folks packed into a room to observe our county council. Again, look around and listen.

Some of these concerned community people are starting to question a certain county council member. The questioning is getting louder as more facts are shown. In fact, it is obviously embarrassing to find out just who and which one of the councilmen these facts are pinned on. Again, if you attend a meeting or two, you will agree that most of the councilmen are there to help and that they believe in the good. They want to help. They want to make our county a better place!

However, we do have a councilman on board whom most would agree should not be a part of our county’s county council. If there is an ethics committee, and we know there is, then why is this councilman allowed to be on our county council? How do other council members feel knowing the facts on their fellow councilman? They must certainly feel odd sitting up there next to him. This councilman is our former county council finance chairmen, yet in February 2012, the Chronicle-Independent printed an article of some of his unpaid fees and taxes. He has a bankruptcy history and has some judgments against him. He ran for Kershaw County sheriff and lost, which is OK except that he seems to steadily disagree with the present sheriff. In one’s humble opinion, this man ran for sheriff, lost and seems to work against quite a bit of our necessary needs of our entire present sheriff’s department.

So, when sitting back and observing our county council, it seems almost unbelievable to see this councilman sitting up there! He owes judgments and past filing fees but he was our county council finance chairman. Really? Would you hire an unethical person to do a job for you? Of course not. So why is he here? We know these councilmen mean well and we support them. I do imagine that he embarrasses others. He should resign. A more ethical councilman could then continue to help our great county. Facts are facts.
