Flash Mash, a graduate of Kip Elser’s Kirkwood Stables in Camden, tracked down Well Deserved in deep stretch to win Saturday’s 16th running of the $100,000 Giant’s Causeway Stakes at the Keeneland Race Course in Versailles, Ky.
The 5 ½-furlong race was run over the turf course.
Brian Hernandez Jr. rated Flash Mash in third place as favorite Inspired showed the way at the ¼- and 3/8-mile marks with Well Deserved never worse than 1½-lengths behind. As the field hit the stretch and were three wide, Flash Mash went four wide and reeled in Well Deserved, who took the lead from a fading Inspired and went on to a 1 ½-length win. The final time was 1:03.19.
Hernandez credited Flash Mash and trainer Michael Stidham for doing all the work. He was the beneficiary of it all.
“She placed herself great down the backside,” Hernandez said. “Turning for home, we knew she’d get there. All the thanks go out to the Stidham barn. They did everything; I was just the passenger.”
Owned by Prime Equestrian S.A.R.L., Flash Mash earned $60,000 for the victory, her fifth in nine starts. The 4-year-old daughter of Smarty Jones increased her career earnings to $196,316.
