State tournament play opened on a sour note for the Lugoff-Elgin softball team which kicked off post-season action Wednesday with a 6-0 loss to Region 6 champion Carolina Forest on Wednesday night in Myrtle Beach.
The loss dropped the Lady Demons into an elimination game against the loser of Thursday’s Lexington vs. Ashley Ridge pairing. In either instance, the West Wateree entry will have to travel. Should L-E play Lexington, the game will be tonight at 6 p.m. Should it be Ashley Ridge, the contest will be at 6 p.m. Saturday.
In news/changes from second round playoff scenarios which were included in Wednesday’s edition of the Chronicle-Independent, on Thursday, the North Central baseball team learned its second round game would be played tonight, rather than Saturday.
The Knights traveled to meet Fox Creek in Thursday’s class A District 4 opener.  Regardless of the outcome of that contest, the fourth-place finisher from Region 3-A will be on the road tonight. Should NC meet Blacksburg, the game will be played at 6:30 p.m. Should Abbeville be the opponent, tonight’s game will have a 7 p.m. start.
To get the results from Thursday’s opening round games, listen to Kool 102.7 FM for updates. Scores and brackets for all state tournament pairings are included on the High School League Website located at www.schsl.org. Then, click on 2011-12 Brackets & State Champions and go to the sport and classification you wish to search.
Following this weekend’s second round contests, the tournament resumes Monday with elimination games before next Wednesday’s district championship round with the unbeaten team in the four-team events hosting the contest(s).
