A 53-year-old man will spend up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to five counts of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one charge of first degree criminal sexual conduct.

Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies arrested Russell Wayne Reddick, of Cassatt, in August 2011 after the Department of Social Services (DSS) received word he had possibly molested his now 11-year-old granddaughter. The KCSO’s investigation showed he had repeatedly molested both her and her younger sister. Deputies initially charged Reddick with two counts of committing lewd acts on a minor, two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 11 and at least one count of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

A judge denied Reddick bond following his August arrest; Reddick has been in jail since.

At Thursday’s hearing, 5th Circuit Assistant Solicitor Ron Moak told Circuit Court Judge Tommy Cooper that his office dropped one of the criminal sexual conduct charges and the two lewd act counts in favor of the first degree criminal sexual conduct charge involving the older granddaughter.

Moak said the girls revealed in forensic interviews that their “PawPaw” had touched them inappropriately on several occasions. The older granddaughter said Reddick also performed sex acts on her.

“Mr. Reddick admitted he touched the girls and performed oral sex on (the older granddaughter) ‘two to two and a half years ago’ which means she would have been 8 or 9 years old at the time,” Moak said.

Moak said investigators also seized Reddick’s computer. At the time, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said investigators discovered a “large amount of pornography” on Reddick’s computer. At that point, Matthews contacted the S.C. Attorney General’s office.

Assistant Attorney General Jason Anders said a forensic review listed 66 child pornography videos and at least 100 similar photographs on the computer of girls ranging from as young as 6 months old to 16 years of age. The images included depictions of bondage and bestiality, Anders said.

Moak ran four video clips of KCSO investigator Steve Knafelc interviewing Reddick. In those clips, Reddick admits to touching the girls and performing acts on his elder granddaughter. Moak also explained that Reddick confirmed which website he used to view some of the pornography -- a website Knafelc already knew about from one of the victims.

Moak also said the girls said they told their mother about the molestation, but that she did nothing about it. They said their stepfather molested them as well. Moak said separate charges have been filed against the girls’ mother and stepfather and that Reddick may be called to assist in the case against them.

Public Defender Jason Kirincich said there is “no excuse, no mitigation” for Reddick’s actions. Kirincich said Reddick had never really been in trouble before; Moak said Reddick had been previously arrested six times for bad checks. Kirincich said Reddick worked for DuPont for 23 years and was briefly married.

After accepting Reddick’s guilty pleas, Cooper sentenced Reddick to 10 years for each of the exploitation charges to run concurrently with credit for time served. He then sentenced Reddick to 30 years in prison to run concurrently with the exploitation sentences, also with credit for time served.
