A 30-year-old former Kershaw County Detention Center (KCDC) corrections officer has been charged with second degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly molesting his girlfriend’s 14-year-old sister.

John M. Drake, of Pitts Street in Camden, turned himself in Oct. 21, according to Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Lt. Phil Crawford. Drake was released the next morning on bond. Crawford said Drake would have a preliminary hearing in the near future and then be bound over to a grand jury.

According to a KCSO report, the accusations against Drake were made Oct. 7.

“We had to wait for the results of a forensic interview with the victim before we could charge him,” Crawford explained when asked about the two week delay between the accusations and arrest.

In the report, the girl’s mother said she and her youngest daughter moved in with Drake and the victim’s 18-year-old sister on Sept. 1. The victim’s mother told deputies that after they moved in, Drake sent sexually suggestive texts and an explicit picture of himself to her 14-year-old daughter. She said her daughter deleted the text and picture because she did not want them on her phone.

Sometime later, Drake allegedly kissed her hand and made attempts to touch her while they were wrestling on the floor. The victim further claimed, through her mother, that in the weeks prior to the report, Drake pulled down both his pants and her pants. She also said Drake kissed her and touched her inappropriately.

Investigators writing the report indicated more may have happened but that the girl did not want to come forward. In the report, the victim’s mother claimed her 18-year-old daughter knew what was going on, but did nothing to report or prevent it. Crawford indicated that may not have been the case.

“The sister didn’t know about it until after the fact,” said Crawford, adding the older girl would not be charged.

Crawford said Drake, who has two children of his own, has no previous record.
