Noted and passed

• The political correctness police force is active in San Francisco, where an ordinance has been passed decreeing that McDonald’s Happy Meals can’t contain a toy unless the meal meets certain nutritional standards laid down by that city’s authorities. We aren’t sure what the city plans to ban next, but such actions are political correctness run amok.

• President Obama has invited Congressional leaders of both parties to join him at the White House Nov. 18 to discuss an agenda for the last couple months of the lame-duck Congress. We hope this will be the first of many meetings between leaders of the two parties and that it might lead to some attempt to get along with each other despite widely disparate views of what this country needs. But we aren’t counting on it.

• The new speaker of the House of Representatives is probably going to be Rep. John Boehner of Ohio; he didn’t sound very conciliatory in remarks made shortly after Tuesday’s landslide Republican election. We agree that the American voters spoke loudly in rejecting what President Obama and the Democratic Congress did during the last two years, but we were a little disappointed in Boehner’s harsh tone. Being a gracious winner is just as important as being a good loser, but Boehner crowed a bit too much for us.

• Nancy Pelosi, deposed as speaker of the House of Representatives last week, says she’s considering running for House minority leader once the new year begins and Republicans take control of Congress. Seeing as how Pelosi’s heavy-handed leadership and far-left philosophy were major factors in the Democratic debacle, we’d say that she is in deep denial of reality. Her chances of winning that post are roughly equivalent to a cow’s chances of jumping over the moon, we’d guess.
