The Quilters of Kershaw County is a guild of approximately 65 members from five counties who meet monthly to learn about quilting and to improve their quilting techniques.

In addition to educational programs, members are involved in designing and creating quilts which are given to charities in Kershaw and Richland counties.

In 2012, one of the educational programs was the Jan Shore Quilt Challenge. In September each participant received a “fat quarter” of fabric designed by Jan Shore. A fat quarter is a piece of fabric measuring 22x18 inches. Eighteen members of the guild participated in the challenge. The finished projects were collected, judged for creativity, workmanship and fabric coordination and displayed in the Bassatt Building at the Fine Arts Center in early spring.

“Judging these was very difficult,” Shore said after selecting the winners. “Every single one had aspects that are amazing. Quilting really is an art. Any of these could be in a museum.”

Rachelle Apol, of Dalzell won first place for her quilt. Susan Morris of Elgin won second place.
