The Kershaw County Aquatic Center, located on Battleship Road in Camden, will be shut down until Friday according to Kershaw County Recreation Department Director James Davis.

Davis said a small piece of molding near the pool’s steps caved in Monday, which resulted in the facility’s closing.

“There was about a one-square foot piece right by the steps that gave in, it was just a molded piece that fell in,” Davis said.

He said that particular portion of the pool had been repeatedly been patched over the years, but believed recent steady rain likely loosened it. Davis said the recreation department’s aim is to have the pool back up and running by Friday.

“We have licensed and bonded guys coming in and they’ll have to lower the water to get it repaired,” he said. “For safety reasons, we called DHEC (S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control) as well to make sure there was nothing structurally wrong with the pool itself. They said that it was fine, but we went and closed it to get things taken care of and hopefully it will be open by Friday.”

The pool is normally open seven days a week during the summer and holds a variety of recreational activities, including swimming lessons and water aerobics.
