Defending event champion, Kelli Murphy of Elgin is one win away from successfully defending her Carolinas Junior Girls Championship title after battling back in some tough matches.
The 56th edition of the event, conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association, is being hosted by the Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
By virtue of her 2011 victory in this event, Murphy was exempt from having to qualify for match play, which began on Wednesday.
Thursday morning, the recently crowned Columbia City Women’s champion, scored a 3 & 2 victory over Annika Bovender of Mount Pleasant to secure a spot in that afternoon’s final match against Lucia Polo of Greensboro, N.C.
That match was still in progress as of press time on Thursday.
Murphy, a rising junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School who played at number one for Mike Robinson’s Demons golf squad, came away with a 1-up win over Eden Howard of Lamar in her first match on Wednesday, winning on the 18th hole. That afternoon, she faced 12-year-old hot shot, Amy Wooten of Clinton, N.C., and would go on to win by a 3 & 2 margin.
“My putter really helped me out today,” Murphy said with a smile following her two victories on the first day of match play.
Both Murphy and Polo secured invitations to represent the Carolinas Junior Girls Team in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge Matches on July 27-29, at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va., as both finalists are accorded that honor.
