Automotive News, a weekly automotive industry newspaper, recently recognized Mark Mason Jr., general manager of Lugoff Ford in Lugoff, as one of its “40 Under 40” up-and-coming dealers or mangers from around the country. Automotive News’ July 16 cover story identified young, talented and ambitious individuals that are making a mark in this highly competitive industry.

According to a press releasing announcing his inclusion on the list, a group headed by his father, Mark Mason Sr., bought Lugoff Ford in September 2008 at the beginning of the recession and it was a tough beginning. In 2010, the younger Mason took over as general manager and wasted no time in tackling the store’s problems. The results have been impressive, Automotive News said. New vehicle sales have doubled, used vehicle sales have tripled and profits have soared 127 percent.

“When we took over in 2008, the store was doing somewhere between 45 and 50 units a month,” Mason Jr. said. “Now we’re in the ballpark of 100 to 110 new and used combined per month.”

Automotive News said Mason made customer satisfaction a priority, following a policy known as the “three Rs”. If a customer is not satisfied with a vehicle, the dealership will repair the vehicle, refund the purchase price or replace the vehicle with something the customer likes better.

Mason Jr. said he hopes to keep improving Lugoff Ford with a goal to be in the top 5 percent of Ford dealers in customer satisfaction and profitability as a percentage of sales by 2014.

He and his wife, Amy, have two daughters, Sydney, 8, and Emily, 5; they reside in Elgin.
