Brian Robert Sharpe, the 25-year-old Johnsonville man arrested Thursday for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl, now faces charges that he tried to have the girl and her mother killed.

When Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) investigators arrested Sharpe, they charged with him first degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. They took him to the Kershaw County Detention Center (KCDC) to await a bond hearing.

According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, Sharpe allegedly confided in another detainee, soliciting them to make sure the child victim and her mother did not testify against him. Sharpe allegedly asked the inmate to either do this himself once they got out of jail, or to get someone else to do so. The other detainee, however, reported Sharpe’s request to KCDC staff. They, in turn, contacted the KCSO. The detainee provided a detailed statement to an investigator, after which they and Matthews met with assistant solicitors from the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Camden. At that time, the solicitor’s office made the decision to charge sharpe with solicitation to commit murder against the girl and her mother.

Sharpe appeared before Circuit Court Judge G. Thomas Cooper in Camden for his bond hearing Monday on his initial criminal sexual conduct charge. During the hearing, the assistant solicitor handling the hearing advised the court of the new solicitation to commit murder charge against Sharpe.

Sharpe’s arrest Thursday came after family members contacted the KCSO in early June saying the girl told them Sharpe -- her mother’s boyfriend -- had sexually assaulted her during the early morning hours of June 1. Deputies arrested Sharpe after he initially agreed, but then refused to take a polygraph exam. He then allegedly began harassing the girl’s mother over her decision to proceed with charges against him.

Cooper set Sharpe’s bond on the criminal sexual conduct charge at $200,000. A second bond hearing is scheduled for today on the murder solicitation charge. Sharpe remains in jail awaiting trial.
