Eight teams, including host Lugoff-Elgin, will get their final tune-up for their regular season openers when they participate in the seventh annual May Plant Credit Union Kickoff Classic at Lugoff-Elgin Stadium on Friday, Aug. 17.
The first of four mini-games, all of which will be one half of play, begins at 6 p.m. with games schedule to be played each hour.
The first contest of the night will have Fairfield Central squad, which has dropped into class AA ranks this year, meeting Ridge View, a member of Region 4-AAAA, along with L-E.
The 7 p.m. game features a pair of 4A colleagues as Blythewood, another Region 4-AAAA entry, takes on West Florence, out of Region 6. WF will play both L-E and Camden in non-region games this season.
At 8 p.m., Union County and first-year head coach Steve Taneyhill, who led Chesterfield to three straight class A Division I titles between 2007 and 2009, will play Lake City, which drops into the AA ranks this season after having played in AAA in the past.
The night comes to a close when the host Demons entertain Westwood in the 9 p.m. finale. Westwood is a first-year school in Blythewood and will be a member of Region 4-AAA, along with Camden. The Red Hawks are coached by L-E graduate and former Demons’ football player, Rodney Summers.
The Demons will kick off their regular season one week later when they travel to meet Fort Mill. Neither Camden nor North Central is able to play in the MPCU Kickoff Classic since they both open regular season play that night. Camden opens at Cheraw while North Central hosts Cardinal Newman.
Tickets for the May Plant Credit Union Kickoff Classic are priced at $6 each and will be available at the gates the night of the event. The gates to the stadium will open at 5:30 p.m.
