The fourth annual KershawHealth Springdale 5K at Sunset will be held on Saturday, August 18 at Springdale Race Course. The 5K Walk/Run is coordinated by the United Way of Kershaw County and benefits the United Way’s Health Care Council and its mission of improving the health of everyone in our community.

“We are proud to sponsor this event because it encourages so many people to become more active … whether by walking or running. Regular exercise is a vital part of maintaining your health and wellness,” KershawHealth President and CEO Donnie Weeks said, “and that is something we certainly like to promote. And, of course, we’re very supportive of the United Way Health Care Council’s efforts to improve the health of local citizens.”

Held on historic Springdale Race Course, the race presents an ideal grass and packed surface for dedicated runners and scenic vistas for walkers and casual runners.  But it also offers spectators a novel sight -- two-legged runners competing over a course usually travelled by thundering Thoroughbred steeplechasers. Last year, more than 200 runners and walkers took part in the race, and all were impressed by the beauty and challenge of the course.

“This course is challenging,” noted Pam Spivey, race coordinator and the United Way’s director of campaign and communications. “It’s very different from the usual road races, and as a runner, I understand how this takes your training to a new level.” However, she said, “it’s also a course that casual runners can navigate, and it makes for a beautiful walk that even kids will enjoy. I believe it’s one of the most unique races in South Carolina.”

Participants are invited to include the whole family or to bring their dogs along for the walk. Last year, more than 400 people attended the event, with more than half actually running or walking the course. KershawHealth will provide free body composition analysis for participants prior to the race and Target will be offering post-race snacks. Spectators will be seated in the grandstand, where the entire course is visible. Live music will entertain spectators and runners throughout the event, and tailgating is encouraged. Convenient parking is available next to the grandstand.

“This is a very family-oriented event, and we encourage everyone to enjoy themselves before and after the race. Make an evening of it,” United Way President Donny Supplee noted. “Last year, we had lots of children cheering on their parents or walking with them, and that’s great to see. It’s just the sort of activity the United Way and our Health Care Council wants to promote.”

The KershawHealth Springdale 5K at Sunset begins at 6:45 pm on Saturday, Aug. 18. Packet pickup and late registration will be available at 5:45 pm on race day. Registration is $30 and includes an exclusive race T-shirt. Group rates are available, and there is no charge for spectators. Registration forms are available at the United Way of Kershaw County at 110 E. DeKalb Street, or at Mail completed registration form and check or money order to: Strictly Running, 736 Harden Street, Columbia SC 29025.
