The Bethune Police Department (BPD) installed a new computer system at no cost to the town. BPD Capt. Brandon Brown informed Bethune Town Council of the installation during its Aug. 9 meeting. Minutes of the meeting did not detail how the BPD acquired the computer system.

In the meantime, Brown also told council that the BPD is now enrolled in the military’s “Section 1033 Program.” According to the S.C. Budget and Control Board’s website, the 1033 program authorizes the U.S. Department of Defense to transfer excess military property to state and local law enforcement agencies. Brown said the surplus program entitles the BPD to acquire items such as body armor, night vision equipment, weapons and even vehicles.

The budget and control board website indicates that an annual fee is involved, based on the number of officers in the department. With departments of one to 25 officers, such as Bethune’s, the annual cost is $500.

Aside from approving July’s meeting minutes and financial statement, council conducted no other business.

Bethune Town Council meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at Bethune Town Hall, 101 Elm St. All meetings are open to the public.
